Jet is a fossilized coal formed over a period of many thousands of years composed of fossilized wood.  Jet was extremely popular in the 19th century. It was made famous by Queen Victoria of England, who wore jet as part of her mourning dress after the death of Prince Albert. France, Germany (Württemberg), and Spain have deposits of jet. The chief English source is the Yorkshire coast, near Whitby and Eskdale.
