Our Carnelian has a range of yellowish Orange, orangy Red, light brownish Red and light brownish Orange hues with a semi-transparent to Opaque quality. Carnelian, a chalcedony quartz, colored by Iron Oxide impurities is most likely named from the 'kornel cherry' because of its brownish red to orange color. Carnelian is mined in India, Brazil, Madagascar, Namibia, Sri Lanka, Uruguay, US (California). Sard is the dark Brownish Red Chalcedony colored by iron often confused with Carnelian.
